89 rope, several hundred regular South Atlantic flights have now been completed and hundreds of millions of letters transport- ed. Attempts to conquer the Atlantic by air go back to the year 1928; catapult-launched flights from aboard the “Bremen” steamer also began shortly afterwards. As this expediting service covers a stretch of around 1,600 km, i.e. around a third of the entire ocean route, these flights must also be counted among the series of scheduled attempts. In the summer of this year, the North Atlantic route was made accessible for air traffic. Following ex- haustive test flights, two Dornier flying boats were deployed on the Lisbon- Azores-New York route. The two boats, the “Zephyr” and the “Aeolus”, have crossed and returned over the North Atlantic twice. For us, these ocean flights covering around 33,000 km are associated with the pleasing fact that Askania airborne equipment contributed to the successful flights, all the more so as the “Zephyr” fly- ing boat had to negotiate strong headwinds and extremely poor weather, many electric storms, rain etc. on its 22-hour flight. Da dieser Vorausbringerdienst über eine Strecke von etwa 1600 km führt, also rund ¹ein Drittel der gesamten Ozeanstrecke, so müssen auch diese Flüge in die Reihe der planmäßigen Versuche gerechnet werden. Im Sommer dieses Jahres wurde nunmehr die Nordatlantikstre- cke für den Flugverkehr erschlossen. Zwei Dornier-Flugboote, ausgerüstet mit Junkers-Schwerölmotoren, wurden nach einge- henden Versuchsflügen auf der Strecke Lissabon-Azoren-New York eingesetzt. Die beiden Flugboote „Zephyr“ and „Aeolus“ haben zweimal den Nordatlantik hin und zurück überquert. Für uns ist mit diesen Ozeanflügen, die über rund 33000 km führten, die erfreuliche Tatsache verbunden, dass Askania- Bordgeräte zur erfolgreichen Durchführung beitrugen, um so mehr, als das Flugboot „Zephir“ bei seinem 22stündigen Flug sehr starke Gegenwinde und äußerst schlechtes Wetter, viele Gewitterstörungen, Regen usw. zu überwinden hatte. Hier fiel unseren Geräten, namentlich den Blindflug-Instrumenten, eine verantwortungsvolle Aufgabe zu und wir freuen uns besonders über die unseren Instrumenten ausgesprochene Anerkennung.
